Carved stelae in Monte Albán
Monte Albán, the best known Zapotec center in Oaxaca, is situated just outside Oaxaca de Juárez. It can be reached by bus in about half and hour from the bus station in the center of Oaxaca.
Monte Albán was constructed on a table top mountain which offers a beautiful 360 degree view of the surrounding valleys. Monte Albán is worth a visit just for the view, but offers much more than this.
This Zapotec center offers to visitors temples, carved stelae, a ball court, and much more to investigate during a visit. There is a museum located within the ruins that offers a very interesting selection of artifacts. This Zapotec center is highly recomended during your visit to Oaxaca.
Mitla in Oaxaca, Mexico
Mitla is located 24 miles from Oaxaca de Juárez. It was originally built by the Zapotecs but later occupied by the Mixtecs who came down from the high sierra mountains around A.D. 900.
There is a craft market outside the ruins and the town of Mitla is home to many shops that sell hand made regional crafts, clothing and Mezcal (regional drink).
A visit to Mitla is recomended during a stay in Oaxaca, for the interesting ruins and many places to view and buy regional crafts.
Oaxaca Regional Museum
Santo Domingo de Guzmán church is located in the Historic Center of Oaxaca de Juárez. The church is very well known throughout the region and is home to beautiful gold carvings and original oil paintings.
Adjacent to Santo Domingo is the Oaxaca Regional museum, the now museum was once a convent.
The Oaxaca Regional Museum houses many different exhibition rooms and subjects of exhibition, from original oil paintings to artifacts from Monte Albán. Outside the museum are beautiful gardens with regional plants and cactus.
Santo Domingo de Guzmán and the Oaxaca Regional Museum are very highly recommended for a visit during your stay in Oaxaca.
